MUMBAI: The long-awaited National Design Policy is likely to be unveiled in January 06. The focus of the policy will be to promote Made in India products as branded quality products in the international market to boost exports.

Inaugurating the fifth national summit on design organised by the CII with the National Institute of Design (NID), Naresh Nandan Prasad, joint secretary of the Union commerce ministry said the policy would be announced after the approval of the Cabinet committee. In fact, the proposed draft has been on the commerce ministry website inviting comments and the joint secretary said they had received a fair amount of suggestions.

According to Prasad, the policy would address almost all issues related to the development of the design concept at all levels of manufacturing sectors focusing on small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and rural/ cottage industries. This will be a good chance to enhance employment opportunities and improve our products across the world besides giving a boost to our exports, said Prasad.

Design education would also play a key role for which Prasad emphasised the setting up of more Design schools like NID. The North-East, said Prasad, was where the Centre was looking at developing one. We need to make design a movement, a culture for it to succeed, said Prasad. Union minister of state for commerce EVKS Elangovan, who did not make it for the summit, in his message, said the Indian design industry was moving towards growth which calls for a collective effort on the part of industry, academia, designers, consulting firms and allied services to place their focus on Indian culture and traditions and come out with strong branding and design forays to take the Indian design to the global arena.

Elangovan said the ministry officials were busy setting up an India Design Council, initiating good design mark and creating a network of National Centres of Excellence devoted to design.
