Delimitation bill awaits Cabinet nod

NEW DELHI: Endorsing the decision taken at an all-party meeting to undertake the next round of delimitation exercise based on the 2001 census, the Centre is likely to seek Cabinet approval for the new Bill to present before Parliament.
The process of delimitation of Lok Sabha and assembly constituencies based on 1991 census had met with heavy resistance from MPs, including those from the BJP. The MPs resisted the efforts of Delimitation Commission headed by Justice Kuldeep Singh to change the boundaries of their long serving constituencies just before polls.
They argued the next round of delimitation process should be done on the basis of ‘01 census as any change could damage their prospects.
