Delhi govt meet tomorrow on fare hike

new delhi: uncertainity prevailed in the capital over an impending transport crisis in the national capital after a steep hike in the cng even as the delhi government would be meeting on monday to discuss the fall out of the move. the over 28 per cent increase in cng prices, from rs 13.11 per kg to rs 16.83 per kg, was mainly due to increase in cost of gas by rs 2.29 per kg besides doubling of operating cost. the decision to increase the price of cng was taken by indraprastha gas - the sole supplier of compressed natural gas in delhi. some of the transport unions in delhi have threatened to go on a strike if delhi government failed to announce a "substantial" increase in the fare hike. post-price increase, the per kilometre operating cost of three-wheelers would go up from rs 0.38 to rs 0.48 while that of buses would increase from rs 3.7 to rs 4.75, an igl official said, adding running a cng car would now cost rs 0.81 per km as against rs 0.63 per km presently. delhi''s transport minister ajay maken, while admitting that the fare would have to be increased, said that the cabinet would be meeting tomorrow to discuss the isue besides asking the centre to roll-back the steep hike. indicating of an imminent fare hike, he said the delhi transport corporation was facing a loss of rs one crore every month.
