Decision on sops to be taken in SAD-BJP meeting: Badal

JALANDHAR: The decision on continuation of sops, including free power, given to farmers would be taken in a joint meeting of Punjab's ruling coalition partners Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP, Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said today.
"We will take the decision on subsidies in the coordination committee's next meeting and after that the outcome will be placed before the cabinet," Badal said here.
Asked whether new taxes would be introduced in the state's next budget, he said "everything will be cleared in the budget".
Criticising the Union government for its decision to hike prices of petrol and diesel, Badal said the issue would be raised in the proposed BJP-SAD rally, scheduled to be held on February 26 at Ramlila ground in New Delhi.
Other issues to be raised in the rally include "denial" of any financial package to farmers of Punjab, who contribute more than 70 per cent to the central poll of food grain, "discrimination" in extending special concession to the industry, which was suffering due to the concession given to the neighbouring states of Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir and Centre's alleged attempt to weaken the supreme religious body of Sikhs, the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, he said.
Asked for his reaction to the High Court's order that Sikhs were not in minority in Punjab, Badal said "I just want to say that judiciary should have taken the sentiments of Sikhs into confidence before taking any decision on the issue".
