Controlling inflation high on agenda: Bansal

NEW DELHI: Asserting that price control remains high on its agenda, the Government on Tuesday said cumulative inflation stood at 4.33 per cent this fiscal so far against 5.98 per cent in the same period in 2006-07.
The cumulative inflation in terms of Wholesale Price Index (since the first week of April 2007 to February 23, 2008) was 4.33 per cent during the current financial year, Minister of State for Finance Pawan Kumar Bansal told Rajya Sabha in a written reply.
This is lower than 5.98 per cent as on February 24, 2007 in the last financial year 2006-07, he said.
The year-on-year inflation as on February 23, 2008, for food grains, edible oils and fertilisers was 3 per cent, 13.19 per cent and 1.80 per cent respectively as compared to 9.66 per cent, 13.29 per cent and 1.83 per cent respectively as on February 24, 2007, he said.
As per official data, for the week ended February 23, the wholesale price-based inflation stood at 5.02 per cent as against 4.89 per in the previous week.
The inflation rate for the first time in 10 months breached the five per cent mark, the data showed.
Bansal said, "containment of inflation remains high on the agenda of the Government."
He said, anti-inflationary policies of the government include strict fiscal discipline, rationalisation of duties of essential items, effective supply-demand management of essential commodities through liberal tariff and trade policies and strengthening of the public distribution system.
