Competition commission finally gets more teeth

NEW DELHI: The government has empowered the Competition Commission of India (CCI) to take up cases against companies indulging in anti-competitive practices and abusing their dominance in the market.

The government is set to notify the provisions of Competition Act, 2002, which deals with anti-competitive agreements and abuse of dominance, said an official of the ministry of corporate affairs, who asked not to be named.

The notification will come into effect from Wednesday, the official said. Following this, the regulator will be able to take to task companies indulging in anti-competitive agreements, which can have implications for competition in the market.
