CITU, other trade unions call strike on August 20

CITU and other left trade unions today called a country-wide general strike on August 20 to protest against rising inflation.

KOLKATA: CITU and other left trade unions today called a country-wide general strike on August 20 to protest against rising inflation.

CITU said in a statement that the strike had been called to protest rising inflation and press the demand for strengthening the public distribution system and protecting workers in the unorganised sector.

The statement said the Indo-US civil nuclear deal would also undermine the sovereignty of the country.

Hospital, ambulance, fire services, water supply, electricity and other essential services would be kept out of the purview of the strike, it added.
