CII finds ways to tackle poverty

The Confederation of Indian Industry has advocated a "holistic approach" to tackling the problem of urban poverty.

NEW DELHI: The Confederation of Indian Industry has advocated a "holistic approach" to tackling the problem of urban poverty.

"Perhaps we need to think local, rather than global and focus on one large city as a pilot project first, make it a success and then attempt replicating this effort elsewhere", a CII study on ''alleviating urban poverty'' said.

The study also said that the issue which required careful and in-depth analysis was the high rate of urban population that had been compounded by the migration from rural areas and the inadequacy of infrastructure in urban areas leading to proliferation of slums and increasing casualisation of labour.

CII has also suggested measures including slum-networking in cities and replacing slums with houses built of cheap but sturdy materials through the study.
