THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Centre's "wrong" agricultural policy had pushed majority of farmers in Kerala into a grave crisis, State Agriculture Minister Mullakkara Rathnakaran said on Friday.

Replying to a calling attention motion by M V Sreyams Kumar (JD-S), he said the Centre would be asked to announce a compensation package for farmers in the state.

Almost 90 percent of small and marginal farmers were suffering on account of the Centre's import policy. The state would also request the Centre to set up agricultural import monitoring centres in all states.

The government planned to set up more processing centres for agricultural products in the co-operative sector.

Sreyams Kumar said since agriculture was a state subject, the state should put maximum pressure on the Centre to change its policies to protect the interests of farmers.
