SHILLONG: In a bid to boost power generation in the north eastern region, the Centre plans to pump in Rs 28,000 crore to add 5,615 mw of power during the 11th Five Year Plan, with 4,055 mw of hydro and 1,560 mw of thermal power, an official statement said here today.

''Suitable investments would also be made for strengthening the transmission and distribution networks,'' the statement said.

The union ministry of power has rejected the demand of some state governments for free allocation of power beyond what was statutorily granted to the host state, against commitment to provide basic infrastructure like land and water for a power project, the statement said.

''The government allocates 10 per cent of free power to the host state for hydel projects to counter issues relating to displacement of people and submergence. Besides, the states are already entitled to 10 per cent preferential allocation of power in case of coal based plants,'' it said.

Social organisions in Meghalaya including the Khasi Students' Union and the Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People have opposed the state government's decision in allowing private companies to develop power in the state.
