Centre likely to introduce special scheme for primitive tribes

Centre is likely to introduce a special scheme for the socio-economic development of the primitive tribes in the 11th five-year plan.

BERHAMPUR: The Centre is likely to introduce a special scheme for the socio-economic development of the primitive tribes in the country in the 11th five-year plan.

"As many as 75 primitive tribes, including 13 groups in Orissa, have been identified by the Centre and their living condition is very miserable despite several plans and progammmes aimed at improving their life style," said Gopo Bihari Panda, Adviser (Social Justice Empowerment), Planning Commission, here.

"We are giving considerable thrust on overall development of the primitive tribes living in various parts of the country during the 11th plan period and prepared a special scheme for them," Panda said.

He was speaking at a function to inaugurate a coaching centre for Scheduled Castes and Tribes yesterday at Berhampur university here. The Center aimed at providing training to SC and ST students to face interviews for jobs.

Describing the proposed scheme for the primitive tribes "very flexible", Panda said it was designed with involvement of all the line departments.

"With introduction of the new scheme, we hope their condition in all aspects; socio-economic, and education will be improved," he said.
