Centre eases norms for rice discoloration to 4 per cent

"Centre has eased the standards for discoloration of rice to 4 per cent and we received communication in this regard on Friday," Punjab Food and Civil Supplies, Secretary, S.P. Singh told repoters today.

CHANDIGARH: The Centre has relaxed the norms for discoloration of Custom Milled Rice (CMR) from 3 per cent to 4 per cent which is to be procured for Central Pool for the season 2009-10, giving a relief to Punjab rice millers who boycotted the procurement process for over ten days.

"Centre has eased the standards for discoloration of rice to 4 per cent and we received communication in this regard on Friday," Punjab Food and Civil Supplies, Secretary, S.P. Singh told repoters today.

Centre had already relaxed the standards for damaged rice from 3 per cent to 4 per cent on October 3 on the request of Punjab government.

Welcoming the decision, Punjab Rice Millers Association, Tarsem Saini said that the relaxation in norms for discoloration would prove to be good for rice milling.

However, he said that Centre had not relaxed norms for levy rice which would deter the millers from milling the paddy meant for statutory levy system. "Millers will now stay away from milling paddy which falls under the levy system," he said.

Over 3000 rice millers had stayed away from the lifting process Since September 30, demanding relaxation in the specifications of discoloration and damage of rice to 5 per cent.
