Centre committed to provide social security to poor
The Centre was committed to provide social security to all workers in the country, says Union Minister for Labour and Employment, Oscar Fernandes.
Inaugurating the general council meeting of the Building and Road Workers Federation (INTUC) here, he said the government believed that without solving the problems of poor the country could not progress.
The Centre had introduced a bill in the Parliament to provide social security to the unorganised sector workers and a standing committee had scrutinised it and submitted their recommendations, he said.
A health insurance for workers of unorganised sector would be implemented from April 1. It provided a Rs 30,000 free health insurance cover to a five-member-family belonging to BPL category, he said.
The 'Am Aadmi Bima Yojana' for the poor workers in the unorganised sector provided insurance for permanent and partially disabled.
Terming the 'Building and other Construction Workers Welfare Act' of Kerala as a model one, he said other state governments should keep the Act as a guideline for the construction workers.
In his presidential address, A C Jose, President, Kerala Building and Road Workers Federation (INTUC) said at present there were over 3.5 lakh workers in the Federation.
He urged the Minister to create an All India Welfare Fund for construction workers.
