CCI disposes of 600 anti-trust cases, says Devender Kumar Sikri

NEW DELHI: Competition Commission of India today said it has disposed of 600 anti-trust cases, which is 80 per cent of the cases filed with it.

Of the information filed with the Commission, most of them (80 per cent) are not subject to investigation, while only 20 per cent of the cases can be probed, CCI Chairman Devender Kumar Sikri said at an industry event.

"We have handled 750 cases and have already disposed of 600 of them, which comes as 80 per cent of the cases," he said.

He further said the CCI is trying to build itself as a credible organisation. "We are trying to achieve this through number of ways like building internal capacity, more and more effect and evidence based approach."

Sikri further said competition promotes economic efficiency and even consumers get benefitted from it, but unchecked competition hurts businesses.

"Anti-competitive behaviour hurts the fabric of competition in the market," Sikri said.

CCI, which has the mandate to prevent practices having adverse effect on competition as well as promote competition in market, is trying to make people aware about the law through several initiatives. It has been organising programmes to promote competition law.

Meanwhile, Competition Appellate Tribunal Member Rajeev Kher said to establish dominance continues to be a challenge for the authorities with the evolution of technology.

"With the evolution of technology disruptive in nature and Internet becoming a critical platform for providing services, deciding dominance has become even more challenging," he said.

He said IPR and Competition laws need to be so synergied so that while the IPR holders enjoys the fruits of his research, the consumer is also not exploited, this put a heavy onus on competition law.
