Cabinet approves bilateral labour agreement with Bahrain
With over 30,000 workers headed for Bahrain every year, the government on Thursday approved signing of a pact with that country on labour and manpower development.
The agreement once functional will ensure protection of workers from exploitation and abuse and enhance employment opportunities for bilateral cooperation in protection and welfare of workers.
"Once the agreement is signed, broad procedures of employment for Indian workers will be chalked out and their protection under relevant labour laws will be arranged for.
"All work contracts can also be authenticated in the process and bilateral exchange of expertise on recruitment and job creation would be available," said an officia ��the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs.
There are about 1.6 lakh Indians working in Bahrain. A Joint Working Group to be constituted with members from both countries will ensure implementation of the MoU and meet regularly to find solutions to bilateral labour issues.
"The cabinet basically reviewed the terms of the bilateral draft agreement and approved it today with some alterations and additions," the official said.
Earlier, similar agreements were signed between Kuwait and the UAE in 2007. Signing of a such a pact with Malaysia was approved earlier by the Union cabinet and is currently awaiting approval from Kuala Lumpur.
India is currently in process of negotiation for signing a similar agreement with Oman.
