Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented her ninth consecutive Union Budget on Sunday, stressing reforms, jobs, skills and inclusive growth. From farmers and students to MSMEs, healthcare workers and commuters, Budget 2026 brings several measures aimed at improving everyday life and boosting income opportunities.

Budget 2026 for Farmers: Focus on Increasing Farmers’ Income

Budget 2026 places strong emphasis on rural prosperity and farm-linked livelihoods. Key initiatives include integrated development of 500 reservoirs and Amrit Sarovars to strengthen fisheries, and entrepreneurship development in the animal husbandry sector to create quality rural jobs.

A major push has been announced for plantation crops. The Coconut Promotion Scheme aims to increase production and productivity by replacing old, non-productive trees with improved varieties, benefiting nearly 30 million people, including 10 million farmers. Dedicated programmes for cashew and cocoa seek to make India self-reliant and turn them into premium global brands by 2030. The government will also work with states to revive the Indian sandalwood ecosystem.


Budget 2026 and Digital Agriculture: Tech Support for Farmers

To support smarter farming, Budget 2026 introduces Bharat-VISTAAR, a multilingual AI-based platform that will help farmers make better decisions, reduce risk and improve productivity through customised advisory services.

In addition, SHE-Marts will be set up for rural women-led enterprises, helping women move from credit-based livelihoods to becoming business owners, building on the success of the Lakhpati Didi programme.

Budget 2026 for Education: New Institutes, Hostels and University Townships

Investment in education is a key highlight of Budget 2026. The finance minister proposed setting up a National Institute of Design in eastern India, along with five university townships near major industrial and logistics corridors to improve industry-academia linkage.

To support girls’ education, one girls’ hostel in every district will be established in higher education STEM institutions. The Budget also proposes four new or upgraded telescope infrastructure facilities to promote research in astrophysics and astronomy.

A high-powered Education to Employment and Enterprise Standing Committee will also be set up to align skills, jobs and emerging technologies such as AI.

Budget 2026 for MSMEs: Creating Champion Small Businesses

Recognising MSMEs as the backbone of the economy, Budget 2026 introduces a three-pronged support strategy, equity, liquidity and professional assistance.

A ₹10,000 crore SME Growth Fund will be launched, while the Self-Reliant India Fund will receive an additional ₹2,000 crore. Over ₹7 lakh crore will be made available through TREDS to ease liquidity stress. To reduce compliance burden, a cadre of ‘Corporate Mitras’ will be developed in Tier-II and Tier-III towns.

Budget 2026 for Healthcare: Jobs, Skills and Better Hospitals

Budget 2026 focuses on creating new healthcare career pathways for youth. The government plans to add 1 lakh Allied Health Professionals over the next five years and train 1.5 lakh caregivers.

The Budget proposes setting up three new All India Institutes of Ayurveda, launching NIMHANS-2, and increasing capacity in district hospitals by 50% through new emergency and trauma care centres. Five regional medical hubs will also be developed to boost medical value tourism.

Budget 2026 and Financial Markets: Banking and Investment Reforms

Several reforms were announced in Budget 2026 to strengthen financial markets. A High-Level Committee on Banking for Viksit Bharat will review the banking sector. Public sector NBFCs like PFC and REC will be restructured to improve efficiency.

To promote urban infrastructure financing, cities issuing municipal bonds above ₹1,000 crore will receive a ₹100 crore incentive. Investment limits under the Portfolio Investment Scheme have also been raised.

Budget 2026 recognises IT as a major growth driver. Software services, IT-enabled services, KPO and contract R&D will be clubbed under a single category, Information Technology Services, with a common safe harbour margin of 15.5%.

The threshold for availing safe harbour benefits has been raised sharply from ₹300 crore to ₹2,000 crore, providing relief to mid-sized IT firms.

Budget 2026 for Transport: High-Speed Rail Corridors Announced

High-speed rail connectivity gets a major push in Budget 2026. Seven corridors have been proposed, including Hyderabad–Chennai, Mumbai–Pune, Pune–Hyderabad, Delhi–Varanasi, and Varanasi–Siliguri. These projects aim to reduce travel time, support urban growth and boost regional economies.

Budget 2026 for Tourism: Medical, Heritage and Cultural Push

To expand tourism-led growth, Budget 2026 proposes five regional medical hubs with AYUSH centres and post-care facilities. A National Institute of Hospitality will be created by upgrading the existing hotel management council.

Heritage tourism will be strengthened through a National Destination Digital Knowledge Grid and development of 15 iconic archaeological sites, along with Buddhist circuit projects in the Northeast.

Budget 2026 introduces Divyangjan Kaushal Yojana for customised, industry-linked training and Divyang Sahara Yojana to support assistive device manufacturing, R&D and technology integration through ALIMCO and PM Divyasha Kendras.
