Budget 2026: FM announces seven high-speed rail corridors, freight corridors, waterways
Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented the Union Budget 2026–27 in the Lok Sabha on Sunday, marking her ninth consecutive Budget. Beyond fiscal numbers, the Budget carried several announcements with clear regional significance, including key proposals for poll-bound Tamil Nadu.

Rare Earth Minerals Corridor for Tamil Nadu and Three Other States

One of the major announcements was the establishment of dedicated rare earth mineral corridors across Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala. The corridors aim to strengthen India’s capabilities in mining, processing, research and manufacturing of rare earth elements.

Presenting the Budget, Sitharaman said the initiative would help build an integrated ecosystem, reduce import dependence and position India as a global player in critical minerals.

High-Speed Rail Connectivity Gets a Push

The finance minister also proposed the development of seven high-speed rail corridors between major cities to improve mobility and economic integration. Among them is the Hyderabad–Chennai corridor, a project expected to significantly boost connectivity between Telangana and Tamil Nadu.

Other proposed corridors include Mumbai–Pune, Pune–Hyderabad, Delhi–Varanasi and Varanasi–Siliguri. Sitharaman said these corridors would support urban growth, reduce travel time and spur regional development.

Coconut Promotion Scheme Announced

In another major announcement, Sitharaman proposed a coconut promotion scheme aimed at increasing production and improving productivity in major coconut-growing states, including Tamil Nadu.

“To further enhance competitiveness in coconut production, I propose a coconut promotion scheme to increase production and enhance productivity through various interventions, including replacing non-productive trees with new saplings of improved varieties,” the finance minister said.

She also announced dedicated programmes for cashew and cocoa, with the goal of making India self-reliant in raw cashew and coconut production and processing. The initiatives aim to enhance export competitiveness and transform Indian cashew and cocoa into premium global brands by 2030.

Budget Day and the Saree That Drew Attention

As with previous years, Sitharaman’s Budget Day attire also drew attention. This year, she chose a magenta Kanjeevaram saree from Tamil Nadu, paired with a yellow blouse and a woollen shawl, a subtle nod to the state on a politically significant day.

Last year, the finance minister had worn an off-white saree featuring Madhubani fish embroidery, gifted by Padma Shri awardee Dulari Devi of Bihar, highlighting the state’s folk art tradition.

Over successive Budgets, Sitharaman’s saree choices have become a quiet tradition, bringing national focus to Indian handlooms and regional textiles, while keeping the spotlight firmly on the Budget and its policy priorities.
