The central government may announce a women-centric scheme in the interim budget that will be presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, sources told ET Now. The discussions on the scheme have already begun revolving around eligibility criteria, annual income, size of the amount.

The scheme is likely to provide direct financial support to 'eligible women', according to sources. Specifically targeting women from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, the scheme is anticipated to provide a fixed monthly amount to those who qualify.

Women aged above 21 years and not covered under any such schemes may be given the benefit.

Finance Minister Sitharaman is set to present her sixth consecutive budget on February 1. It is slated to be an interim budget since the Lok Sabha elections are scheduled for early next year.

The budget-making process usually begins in September, over six months before the date of presentation. Making a budget is a time-taking process that entails numerous steps and consultations.
