Budget 2012: 30% jump in budget for disability sector

NEW DELHI: The budgetary allocation for the disability sector saw a jump of over 30 percent with increased disability pension for below poverty line beneficiaries. The budget for 2012-13 has allocated Rs.471 crore this year compared to Rs.424 crore in 2011-12.

"Under the ongoing Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension Scheme for BPL beneficiaries, the monthly pension amount per person is being raised from Rs 200 to Rs 300," Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee announced while presenting the budget in the Lok Sabha.
However, the NGOs expressed unhappiness and said the budget has left the disability sector extremely disappointed and disillusioned.
"The hopes of 70 million Indians with disability have been betrayed. We are completely heartbroken," said Javed Abidi, convenor, Disabled Rights Group (DRG).
