Bonus for paddy growers inadequate, says Badal

Describing the Rs 50 bonus announced by the Centre on the Minimum Support of paddy as "woefully inadequate", Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal has said the Centre should have given a bonus of Rs 150.

CHANDIGARH: Describing the Rs 50 bonus announced by the Centre on the Minimum Support of paddy as "woefully inadequate", Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Saturday said the Centre should have given a bonus of Rs 150.

In a statement here, Badal said that a "meagre" bonus of Rs 50 per quintal was no answer to the "agony of the farming community."

He regretted that the Centre had not announced any financial package for Punjab on the lines of Vidarbha.

"Centre's deliberate denial of financial package to Punjab on Vidharbha pattern is a pointer towards the apathetic and stepmotherly treatment meted out to Punjabi farmers," said Badal.

A state government spokesperson claimed the relief had come only because of pressure mounted by the chief minister and Member of Parliament Sukhbir Singh Badal on the Centre.

The two leaders had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Union Finance Minister P Chidambram and Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar in this connection, he said.
