Bill to remove problems of working women in unorganised sector

The Centre will introduce a Bill in the coming session of Parliament to remove the problems of working women in the unorganised sector.

KOLKATA: The Centre will introduce a Bill in the coming session of Parliament to remove the problems of working women in the unorganised sector, Union Labour Minister Oscar Fernandes said here on Sunday.

It was the obligation of any society to take care of women after childbirth, Fernandes said in his address to a national level seminar on 'Universal Entitlement of Maternity Benefit', organised by the All India Working Women's Forum of AITUC, the trade union body of the Communist Party of India (CPI).

Speaking on the occasion, AITUC General Secretary Gurudas Dasgupta stressed the need for all apex organisations to come together and ensure that members of the lower social economic groups were provided with real justice so far as the maternal health of an average Indian woman was concerned.

Recent data on the maternal health of an average Indian woman revealed that women in lower social economic groups gained around three to five kilograms during pregnancy as against ten kilograms in the high income groups, Dasgupta, who is also a CPI MP, said.

Nearly 400 women workers from across the country representing the organised and unorganised sectors attended the two-day seminar.
