Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh urges Centre to think out of the box while generating employment

The Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh, a central trade union affiliated to the RSS, has urged the government to think out of the book while formulating employment generation strategies keeping in mind the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic situation and requested the government make all effort to protect jobs in the labour intensive sectors.

In its meeting with Tehwar Chand Gehlot-led group of ministers on employment and skill development, BMS has urged the government to restrict production of tiny, micro and cottage industry products by big domestic companies and other multinational companies to protect the rural economy. “This is a tough and hard decision, but to protect our rural economy it is essential,” BMS said in its statement issued on Saturday.

BMS has requested the government protect existing employment in labour-intensive sectors like agriculture, plantation, beedi, handloom, fishing, etc, claiming huge job losses have occurred in these sectors after the outbreak of Covid19 pandemic.



The other suggestions of BMS included taking measures to protect community based professions, assisting districts which are generating mass employment opportunities, develop clusters of villages for integrated development and come up with migrant worker centric policies to help construction workers, street vendors, hotel workers and daily wage workers.

Besides, it has urged government to issue identity cards to such workers as well as to the self-employed, provide work to local labourers, maintain data on migrant workers to help in manpower assessment and tweak provisions under the employment guarantee act the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee scheme for providing jobs to registered workers.

According to the statement, BMS is of the view that unless there is a paradigm shift in thinking among the policymakers and the enforcement agencies, the desired transformation will not come. “So, the need of the hour is out of box thinking and formulating new strategies keeping in mind the special situations prevailing in India,” it added.
