Automakers smile as India okays for GTR

India on Thursday decided to join the 1998 agreement on Global Technical Regulations (GTR) for automobiles with the Union Cabinet giving a go-ahead to the proposal.

NEW DELHI: In what will facilitate export of vehicles and reduce the cost of part development and production, India on Thursday decided to join the 1998 agreement on Global Technical Regulations (GTR) for automobiles with the Union Cabinet giving a go-ahead to the proposal.

The signing of the agreement will see Indian automakers benefit as design specifications of vehicles will not have to be changed to meet country-specific regulations.

Also, common specifications of automobiles parts would reduce the cost of development/production, and retail prices of vehicles.

It will also make approval procedures easier, expand the scope of the market and provide the consumers with a wider range of choice.

The GTR for motor vehicles is administered by Working Party-29 (World Forum for Harmonisation of Vehicle Regulations) of Economic Commission for Europe (ECE), a body of United Nations working for harmonisation of vehicle regulations.

The agreement will also enhance access to a set of benchmark regulations to measure safety and environmental performance of vehicles and also facilitate its exports.

The 1998 agreement concerns the establishment of GTR for wheeled vehicles, equipment and parts which can be fitted and/or used on wheeled automobiles.

The Cabinet approved the retention and continuation of the National Standing Committee functioning the Department of Road Transport and Highways to regulalrly appraise the outcomes and recommend further course of action.

The department will decide on joining the 1958 agreement and also on setting up of a dedicated body.
