AP to bring more people under BPL category of ration cards

HYDERABAD: Andhra Pradesh government would soon issue an order to increase the income limit to enable more people to get white ration cards under the Below Poverty Line (BPL) category.
The Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, who is camping in his home district of Kadapa, had a telephonic review of the Public Distribution System (PDS) with officials, regarding issuing new ration cards under the enhanced income limit.
The government had recently increased the annual income limit for white ration cards from Rs 20,000 to Rs 60,000 in rural areas and from Rs 24,000 to Rs 75,000 in urban areas.
As a result, the number of beneficiaries is expected to go up significantly.
Reddy directed the officials of the Civil Supplies Department to make arrangements for distribution of additional ration cards.
He said his government would bear the additional financial burden which is expected to be around Rs 28 crore per month.
At present, out of a total of 2.27 crore ration cards in the state, about 1.88 crore cards are issued for Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.
Along with subsidised rice at Rs 2 per Kg, the government would supply palm oil and red gram to the white card holders through fair price shops from October one.
The officials have been asked to complete the process of issuing new ration cards, under the revised income limit, by September 15 this year.
