In a major development for government employees, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the formation of eighth central pay commission.

The move has been awaited by over one crore central government employees and pensioners, who are anticipating the formation the commission to help revise their basic pay, allowances, pension, and other benefits.

Making the announcement, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that the commission will likely be formed by 2026.

He further reiterated that the recommendations of the seventh pay commission have already been implemented. The government will later inform about other details of the commission, including that of the members.

The Seventh Pay Commission brought significant changes to the salary structure, allowances, and pensions of central government employees, ensuring pay parity and benefiting both active employees and retired pensioners.

Following this, attention is now turning to the potential implementation of the 8th Central Pay Commission.

When was 8th pay commission due?

Traditionally, Central Pay Commissions are established every 10 years to review and recommend changes to the pay scales, allowances, and benefits of central government employees. These commissions take factors like inflation and economic conditions into account.

The 7th Pay Commission, constituted by former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on February 28, 2014, submitted its report on November 19, 2015, with recommendations implemented starting January 1, 2016.

Based on this timeline, the 8th Pay Commission could be expected to take effect from January 1, 2026. As with previous commissions, it would likely result in revisions to salaries, including adjustments to Dearness Allowance (DA) and Dearness Relief (DR) for pensioners.
