2,000 new fair price shops to be set up in J&K: Minister
Jammu and Kashmir Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Minister Taj Mohi-ud-Din on Sunday said 2,000 new fair price shops would be set up in the state to strengthen its public distribution system.
Addressing a gathering at a convention organised by the J&K Fair Price Shop Dealers' Association here, he said distribution of essential items needed improvement to check rising prices and curb black marketing.
Taj said directions had already been issued for supply of mid-day meals to schools and ration to anganwari centres through the fair price shops.
"around 3,000 shops have already been set up in the state. The main objective is to provide better services to the consumers living in far-flung of the state since government depots could not cover a large chunk of population in hilly terrains. Besides, the shops also offer job opportunities to unemployed youth under self -employment programme," he added.
The minister said supply to the fair price shops would be released henceforth by concerned supervisors instead of the assistant directors.
He asked the dealers to send their requirements during the first week of every month.
