You’re tagged: RFID to make toll passage faster, cashless
RFID is successfully used for toll collection in countries such as Dubai, Singapore and England. London uses video streaming to transmit data to the road authority if any vehicle skips paying the congestion charge.

RFID will be used at the 13 entry points from where 85% of vehicles roll into Delhi. SDMC is optimistic that after the introduction of this new system for paying tax, congestion at toll plazas will be resolved permanently. There will be three types of entry lanes there: free lane for non-commercial vehicles, mixed lane with payment of toll either by cash or through RFID tag, and dedicated RFID lanes.
The mixed lanes will be converted to full RFID lanes by March 2019.
The system being developed will incorporate data of all vehicles entering and leaving the city. “This will help in not only ensuring that no vehicles older than 10 years are allowed into the city, but will also block blacklisted vehicles,” explained an official. “This additional feature is not part of the existing FASTag system, which primarily focuses on whether the RFID tag has sufficient monetary value to pay the toll. Our system will have more information to ensure no one misuses the tag.”

Explaining the set-up, an official said, “The RFID lanes will have barriers that will open when the vehicle is 25 metres away if the sensors can identify the tags. But we will also have alternate provisions to cater for problems with tags to prevent such vehicles from being allowed past the toll plaza.”
SDMC has received no-objection certificates for seven crossings from PWD and Delhi traffic police. However, the National Highways Authority of India is yet to respond. “We have written three letters to NHAI requesting NoC for development of RFID lanes at six border points. If NHAI delays its reply, then our October deadline might have to be shifted,” said an SDMC official.
