West Bengal keen on TFT-LCD project: Videocon

After the political controversy over Maharashtra cabinet's clearance of Videocon's Rs 8,000 crore FAB project at Navi Mumbai, the company chief executive said on Saturday that West Bengal government has invited him to set up the project there.

MUMBAI: After the political controversy over Maharashtra cabinet's clearance of Videocon's Rs 8,000 crore FAB project at Navi Mumbai, the company chief executive said on Saturday that West Bengal government has invited him to set up the project there.

"On Wednesday, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya rang me, expressing desire for having the project in his state," Videocon Chairman and Managing Director V N Dhoot said.

The controversy was sparked off after Revenue Minister Narayan Rane resigned from the cabinet opposing the decision to allot the land for India's first thin-film transistor liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panel project at a 'throwaway price of Rs 300 crore'. The land was valued at around Rs 3,000 crore, Rane said.

"The West Bengal Information Technology secretary has also written to us, inviting the company to set up the project there," Dhoot said, adding that he had received invitations from some other states also. He said his family hails from Maharashtra, so he has an emotional connect with the state and would like people of the state to benefit from the project, which is likely to provide 10,000 jobs.
