WB govt has not submitted proposal for PCPIR : Paswan

The West Bengal government has not submitted any proposal for setting up a petroleum, chemical and petro-chemical investment region (PCPIR) in the state.

KOLKATA: The West Bengal government has not submitted any proposal for setting up a petroleum, chemical and petro-chemical investment region (PCPIR) in the state, Union Minister of Steel Ram Vilas Paswan said here on Tuesday.

"Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee rang me up and told me that West Bengal should not be written off in respect of PCPIR. But no proposal on it has been submitted by the state government," Paswan, who is also the Chemicals and Fertilisers Minister, told reporters here.

The Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat governments, he said, had sent proposals for setting up PCPIRs in their states.

"A PCPIR would require 250 sq km, and if the state government gave land, we will consider it," he said.

After facing the people's resistance at Nandigram, the state government has identified Nayachar island near the industrial township of Haldia in East Midnapore district for setting up a PCPIR.

Industry minister Nirupam Sen had yesterday said that it would take some time for making a formal proposal for setting up the chemical hub in the state.

Meanwhile, the ruling Left Front during the day gave its nod for Nayachar island as the likely site for the much-debated chemical hub.
