TN moves SC seeking stay on Palar check dam construction

Tamil Nadu government has moved the Supreme Court for a stay to stall the proposed check dam on the Palar river by the Andhra Pradesh government.

VELLORE: Tamil Nadu government has moved the Supreme Court for a stay to stall the proposed check dam on the Palar river by the Andhra Pradesh government, state PWD minister Durai Murugan has said.

"Laying of the foundation stone does not mean that the dam would come up. The Forest department should approve the construction and other legal formalities also need to be completed", he told reporters here yesterday.

"I have already met the lawyers in Delhi and within a few days, we hope to get a stay order", he said.

According to the Tamil Nadu government, the construction of the dam was likely to affect the supply of water in the northern districts of the state. Tamil Nadu is already involved in major river disputes with its neighbours, including Karnataka on sharing Cauvery waters and with Kerala in the Mullaperiyar dam issue.

Andhra Pradesh government had recently announced that it would soon commence the construction of the check dam at Kuppam near Tamil Nadu border on Palar river. Tamil Nadu has already raised objections over the construction.

On the Mullaperiyar dam issue, Durai Murugan said a new dam, as proposed by the Kerala government could be constructed only after all the legal formalities were completed.

"Hence, the construction of the dams are not going to take place as planned by our neighbours", he said.

Kerala government had proposed to replace the existing dam on the Periyar river with a new one on the grounds of safety. But Tamil Nadu vehemently objects to the construction of a new dam arguing that it would affect the water supply.
