Some fertile land to be used for industry: CPI(M)

CPI(M) on Tuesday endorsed Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government's policy and said some fertile land would be used for industrial and infrastructure projects.

KOLKATA: Unfazed by protests from allies and opposition on farmland acquisition for industries, West Bengal's ruling CPI(M) on Tuesday endorsed Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government's policy and said some fertile land would be used for industrial and infrastructure projects.

Proposals for setting up large industries had been received by the state and in some cases work was on for setting them up leaving aside fertile land as much as possible. Land was also required for infrastructure projects, a resolution passed at the ongoing 22nd state conference of the CPI-M here said on the second day of its state conference.

''But some fertile land would be used for this since the quantity of barren land in the state is less than one per cent,'' a resolution adopted at the conference said.

It alleged the opposition was conspiring to obstruct development in the state.

''Initially, they had objected to acquisition of farmland, but later it was seen that they are obstructing setting up of industry also on land unfit for agriculture,'' it said.

CPI-M state secretary Biman Bose, when asked what transpired at the conference on land acquisition, said the issue would be reviewed in detail tomorrow.

He said that during discussion on the political and organisational report, delegates supported the direction of the state government which had received the people's mandate to go ahead.

"When there is a stiff competition among states to woo industries and when some states have given special incentives, our state cannot remain indifferent", the resolution said.
