RGGVY scheme launched in Tamil Nadu

Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana ( RGGVY), the Centre’s scheme to provide power to un-electrified villages\hamlets was launched in Tamil Nadu.

CHENNAI: Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana ( RGGVY), the Centre���s scheme to provide power to un-electrified villages\hamlets was launched in Tamil Nadu in Thiruvallur district on Tuesday by the State Electricity Minister, Arcot N Veerasamy.

The Centre has appointed public sector, Rural Electrification corporation ( REC) as the nodal agency for implementing and monitoring the scheme across the country. REC has sanctioned Rs 447.41 crore to the Tamil Nadu Government to implement the programme in 26 districts by creating the infrastructure during the 11th plan.

The entire scheme, to be completed by December this year, is expected to help 5, 45, 551 below the poverty line households to have access to electricity. Tamil Nadu electricity board has awarded a turnkey contract to the State owned Tansi for executing the RGGVY work in the districts.

Further, 100% subsidy is given under the scheme for effecting free electricity connection to the BPL households. With this scheme, all such households will get service connections besides the entire population having access to electricity, REC said in a release on Tuesday.

The corporation said it has extended major financial assistance to the State for generation, transmission and distribution schemes. During 2007-08 and 2008-09, it has sanctioned Rs 5,063 crore and Rs 11, 233 crore respectively to improve the power infrastructure in the State.
