Rajkot plans to turn Gujarat’s zero-slum city

RAJKOT: If everything goes as planned, then Rajkot would become a 'Zero slum city' by 2010 as it will be one of the primary aims of the Rajkot Municipal Corporation.
Water supply, underground drainage system, improved roads, housing for urban poor, solid waste management and city bus projects were given top priority in the budget proposals for the financial year 2007-08. The RMC on Monday proposed a Rs 365-crore budget for the fiscal 2007-08 which also includes various development projects.
The budget expects revenues to increase by 20% to Rs 199 crore from Rs 177 crore while the capital expenditure was pegged at Rs 183 crore. RMC commissioner Mukesh Kumar says, "We are actively taking up projects like water sewerage, roads and zero slum city project in order to make Rajkot the next fastest developing city after Surat."
The corporation is expecting revenues of Rs 115 crore from octroi collections, property tax of Rs 60 crore, grants of Rs130 crore, capital income of Rs 22 crore and other means it will get Rs 6.5 crore. For the first time, RMC has reported a growth of over 23% in revenues.
The corporation has earmarked Rs 44 crore for water supply, for underground drainage system another Rs 40 crore, on roads it plans to spend Rs 12 crore, housing for urban poor it has earmarked Rs 33 crore and for solid waste management another Rs 6 crore.
