Public outcry stops ongoing work on SEZs in Goa
Following the public outcry, all the two companies setting up Special Economic Zones (SEZs) in the state have stopped the work until further directions.
"Both the companies, whose SEZs are notified, have informed us that they have stopped the work and will not start it till cabinet committee on infrastructure reviews it," Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat told reporters here.
The cabinet committee on infrastructure had held emergency meeting at CM's official residence after strong public protest at proposed SEZ at Kerim in Ponda taluka and mounting pressure on the government to scrap SEZs till the policy is reviewed.
The high-level meeting which was chaired by CM had home minister Ravi Naik, finance minister Dayanand Narvekar, PWD minister Churchill Alemao, revenue minister Jose Philip D'souza, health minister Vishwajit Rane and chief secretary J P Singh participating in it.
"The work on any of SEZs will not start till committee reviews all the projects," Kamat said adding that chief secretary will formulate a white paper on SEZs in Goa which will be tabled on Wednesday.
The Chief Minister said, in the meantime, the companies which had begun their work at two places have voluntarily stopped it. Meditab Specialities Pvt Ltd's pharma SEZ at Keri and K Raheja Corporation Private Limited's IT SEZ have come to halt after today's development.
The SEZ policy in the state is up for review after the committee gets the white paper on SEZs in Goa and also studies some functional SEZs across the country. "It might take two to three months," he said.
