Protest rally against SEZ near Mumbai held

MUMBAI: Organisations opposed to a private Special Entertainment Zone adjoining the city said that they would continue to do so until the proposal was conclusively put aside.

A few thousand protestors gathered at the Azad Maidan yesterday in a rally called by the Bombay Catholic Sabha with other organisations to protest against the SEZ which has been proposed by the Essel group in the Gorai Uttan belt on the outskirts of the city.

The protestors also demanded action against those perpetrating violence against minorities. They also demanded action against the Maharashtra government for seeking to acquire land near the Mumbai airport which they said would destroy nearby villages and an ancient church.

The Essel group has reportedly been re-considering their plan to open the Special Entertainment Zone in Gorai where they already have an amusement park.

Last month protestors had blocked the entry of visitors into the Essel Group's amusement park to protest against the proposed entertainment zone.
