Pranab backs acquisition of land for industrialization
Pranab Mukherjee today came out in support of acquisition of land for industrial development and made a veiled criticism of Trinamool Congress.
Pointing out that the government needed land for reviving old and closed public sector units and development, Mukherjee said "we have to be tolerant. Wherever development projects are undertaken, land is needed".
"Those who are opposing land acquisition, they should know their limits - when to oppose and when not to," Mukherjee said at function here.
The veteran leader cited the example of the ongoing six laning project of the National Highway that connects Kolkata with the country's North East.
"After I met with an accident on the highway earlier this year, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee decided to widen it. But now the National Highway Authority has told me that six laning of the high way will not be possible at several points due to land acquisition related issues," he said.
Mukherjee, however, did not mention Trinamool Congress during his speech.
Acquisition of farmland has become an emotive issue in the state after Trinamool Congress-led opposition scuttled the state government's plans to establish a mega chemical hub in Nandigram which saw lot of blood-splitting since January this year.
The opposition has also opposed the construction of the TATA Motors' small car plant in Singur.
