PM Modi launches GatiShakti to boost India's infra development

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the PM GatiShakti National Master Plan on Wednesday for multi-modal connectivity in a bid to bring India's infrastructure development on a common path.

Describing it as a historic event for the country's infrastructure landscape, the Prime Minister's Office said the GatiShakti project will break departmental silos and institutionalise holistic planning for the stakeholders across major infrastructure projects.

The plan looks to make a centralized portal comprising of all existing and planned infrastructure initiatives of as many as 16 central ministries and departments.


GatiShakti is based on the six pillars of comprehensiveness, prioritisation, optimisation, synchronisation and being analytical and dynamic, the PMO added.

Arguing that infrastructure creation in India had suffered for decades from multiple issues, the Modi government has been pointing to a major lack of coordination between different departments as a prime reason.

The master plan is expected to generate large-scale employment opportunities, cut down logistics costs, improve supply chains and make local goods competitive globally.

PM GatiShakti seeks infra projects to be designed and executed with a common vision, and incorporate the infrastructure schemes of various ministries and state governments.

At the launch event, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal had said the latest initiative will not only give infrastructure creation a new direction but also provide a new pace to existing projects.
