KOCHI: At a time when pollution in rivers is widely debated , Kerala-based NeST Group has entered into a technical tieup with Tokyo-based Oceanaid, technology specialists in water purification, for undertaking purification of rivers, streams and canals in the country .

NeST group has diverse interests in technology, software, infrastructure, food and beverages and education and training and has operations across the globe.

Nest Group managing director N Jehangir said the Japanese technology has been successfully tested and proven in the US, China, Malaysia, Korea, Philippines, Taiwan etc. It will make revolutionary changes in cleaning up small and large water bodies.

The patented technology uses specially designed equipment that is immersed in water to generate and spread micro and nano bubbles. The process does not use any consumables or chemicals and requires very low power. It prevents algae formation in still water bodies.

Oceanaid COO Jun Kubo said the technology is one of its kind in the world has been successfully deployed in large scale purification of rivers, lakes and canals. It is being introduced in India for the first time.

On a trial basis Kubo and his team conducted a detailed study of extent and intensity of pollution of the Thevara-Perandoor canal and Karipuzha canals in Kochi and a viable solution for the purification was developed taking into account the local conditions.

Jehangir said the Japanese has the technology to make such water potable. Already, he said he has enquiries from metros like Bengaluru.
