CHENNAI: The Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources (MNES) is planning to set up a Special Economic Zone to manufacture renewable energy systems and devices in the country, Minister of Non-Conventional Energy Sources Vilas Muttemwar said.
Delivering the inaugural address at the National Conference-cum-Exposition on Renewable Energy "Green Power 2006" here on Thursday, Muttemwar said the Ministry was receiving favourable response from prospective investors, both in India and abroad.
"Solar water heating systems help in displacing the requirement of conventional power. We are aiming to double their installed capacity in every five years," he said.
"Another thrust area is power generation from wastes, being generated in the urban and industrial sectors. A potential of 5000 MW of power generation installed capacity has been assessed through municipal wastes with the associated benefit of wastes reduction and abatement of environmental pollution," he said.
Earlier, MNES Secretary V Subramanian said the ministry was trying to take proactive role in promoting renewable energy along with the industry. He said Tamil Nadu had done good work in this sector, especially in wind energy. "We have to study this model and try to replicate it in other states," he said.
