Malda to get country's first Silk Park
The country's first Silk Park will be set up here on 40 acre land, Deputy Director of sericulture department Bijon Kumar Mandal said on Friday.
About Rs 50 crore has been sanctioned for the first phase of the project, which was to be built in Bangalore earlier.
Mandal said 80 per cent of the project cost would be borne by the Centre and the rest by West Bengal government.
Though local silk does not have any brand value, it is used by weavers of Benaras, Bhagalpur and Chennai and the finished products carry brand name of those places.
With the setting up of the Park, Malda silk would get a brand value as finished products would then be manufactured locally, Mandal said.
Already 15 acre land has been identified in Madhughat and Ramchandrapur areas of Malda which produces 80 per cent of the state's silk, he said.
About 1200 mt silk was produced in a year on 20,000 acre of land in Malda district.
