MUMBAI: After a long hiatus marked by the 26/11 terror attacks in Mumbai and continuing global meltdown, the Maharashtra government is back to business.

On Tuesay, the state will sign investment commitments worth Rs 6,420 crore with five companies in the pipes and chemicals sectors. Chief minister Ashok Chavan, who also holds the industry portfolio, will attend the MoU signing ceremony.

Some of the investment proposals are for industrially-backward regions of the state like Chandrapur and Wardha district in Vidarbha. The five projects are estimated to generate more than 2,400 employment opportunities, a spokesperson for the state industry department said.

The companies, which would sign agreements, are Ashapura Mine Tech for a project in Ratnagiri district, Uttam Galva Metallics in Wardha district, Topworth Pipes & Tubes in Raigad district, Abhishek Corporation in Kolhapur district and Gopani Iron & Power in Chandrapur district.

All the projects will be given the status of mega projects by the state government under a customised policy for investment above Rs 250 crore.
