Maharashtra, Andhra lead the zone race

Ninety-two of the 150 SEZs formally okayed by the Board of Approval are located in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

NEW DELHI: After the notification of SEZ rules earlier this year, it’s an irony that close to two-thirds of special economic zones (SEZs) approved so far are spread over just four states. Ninety-two of the 150 SEZs formally okayed by the Board of Approval are located in Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

In the case of in-principle approvals, Haryana, Maharashtra and Karnataka lead the pack, accounting for 57 of the 117 projects that got the nod.

SEZs approved formally can start operations immediately, whereas those given in-principal permission have to get certain issues like land acquisition sorted out. As many as 27 proposals formally cleared are in Andhra Pradesh, while four from the state have been given in-principle clearance.

SEZs that have got formal nod in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat stand at 26, 19 and 13, respectively, while in-principle clearance issued to these states is for 19, 15 and 7 projects.

States which have lagged behind in getting SEZs off the ground include Chandigarh, Delhi, Jharkhand, Pondicherry, Goa, North-Eastern states and Orissa. As part of its bid to encourage SEZ investments in these states, the Centre has decided to give priority to SEZ applications originating from states that have received no or negligible SEZ investment.

Among other states which have generated a fair amount of interest from SEZ developers are West Bengal with seven formal and six in-principle approvals, Uttar Pradesh with six formal and nine in-principle grants and Haryana with eight formal and 23 in-principle approvals.
