Locals smell scam in IT park project, stage protests

Alleging a "real estate scam" in the name of IT, thousands of locals today marched to protest against the Rajiv Gandhi Information Technology park project at the Donapaula plateau, dotting Taleigo village here.

PANAJI: Alleging a "real estate scam" in the name of IT, thousands of locals today marched to protest against the Rajiv Gandhi Information Technology park project at the Donapaula plateau, dotting Taleigo village here.

Leading the rally, local legislator Atanasio Monserratte, today said that he is ready to shed his blood to stop this ongoing project.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi had laid the foundation stone for this ambitious project in 2005, named after Former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.

"Sonia Gandhi, while inaugurating this park had dreamt of a good IT industry here. She never knew that a huge scam was being thought of, by IT minister Dayanand Narvekar," Monserratte, an independent legislator, who supports Congress-led government in the state, said.

"We are not opposed to IT park or the big companies like Wipro and Infosys setting up their shops here. We will welcome them. But we will not tolerate this scam in the name of IT," Monserratte, former Town and Country Planning minister, said.

Sudden opposition to the IT park coupled with arson, that was witnessed here on December six mid-night, had prompted state government to clamp prohibitory orders in and around the area.
