`Kerala ready for joint seepage water measurement system'

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala government was not against setting up a joint monitoring mechanism with Tamil Nadu at the Mullaperiyar dam site to measure seepage of water till a new dam was constructed, Water Resources Minister N K Premachandran said on Thursday.

Kerala's response to Tamil Nadu's suggestion for joint seepage water measurement system had been sent to the Tamil Nadu government, he told reporters here.

The minister, however, said Kerala was of the view that the safety of the century-old dam could not be ensured by measuring water through existing seepage channels. The expert committee that inspected the dam had found seepage through the foundation and joints.

While the state did not want to discard Tamil Nadu's proposal, other factors like the dam's presence in a seismic area where tremors were frequent should also be taken into account, the minister said.
