Juhu airstrip to be upgraded to small-plane airport

A new airport for small aircrafts would come up at suburban Juhu within next three to four years, a senior AAI official said here on Friday.

MUMBAI: A new airport for small aircrafts would come up at suburban Juhu within next three to four years, a senior AAI official said here on Friday.

"The airport - to be developed at the cost of Rs 80 crore - is likely to be operational within three to four years. This should result in a 10 to 15 per cent decrease in traffic of small aircraft at Mumbai International Airport," Airports Authority of India (AAI) member (planning) V P Agrawal said.

However, since the airstrip was "locked in" from all sides by buildings, the only scope for expansion was towards the sea, for which some environmental clearances were required, he said.

Also, the airstrip was in low-lying area prone to flooding, therefore, the run-way would have to be elevated upto 1.5 metres, he added.

Juhu, which has an airstrip presently, is mostly used by private planes.
