Japan to fund project to clean rivers in Punjab

Japan had proposed to set up a joint committee with Punjab government to implement a project for monitoring and cleaning the polluted rivers in the state.

CHANDIGARH: Japan had proposed to set up a joint committee with Punjab government to implement a project for monitoring and cleaning the polluted rivers in the state.

Kamata Hiroko, Project formulation Advisor of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has put forth a detailed proposal for formation of a committee consisting of officers of Punjab government, Punjab Pollution Control Board and experts from the agency, Media Advisor to Chief Minister, Harcharan Bains, said.

The project would be funded by the government of Japan and completed within three years commencing from April 2009, he said.

Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal welcomed JICA's initiative terming it as a well timed, significant and corrective strategy to combat the menace of polluted river waters.

Expressing concern over poor quality of water in the state, Badal said the state government was already making efforts to ensure safe drinking water for all through proper monitoring of rural water supply schemes.

Various techniques like Reverse Osmosis (RO), Silver Ionization and Ultra Violet were being applied depending onthe source of water, he added.
