Infrastructure for Nationals Games to be ready in time

RANCHI: With the 34th edition of the National Games rescheduled to June 1 from February 15, the organisers claimed that the infrastructure for the games would be ready in time and dismissed speculations that pre-monsoon could be a cause for concern.
"After learning from the meteorological office that the monsoon might arrive late this year, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) rescheduled the National Games to June 1 to 14 from February 15 to 28," Games Organising Secretary H M Hasmi told PTI.
"Most of the disciplines are indoor games and all the events will be completed by June 8, while rains are good for water sports," he said dismissing speculations about pre-monsoon showers, though admitting that outdoor events like track and field would depend on the weatherman's forecast.
An insider, however, questioned how the Games could be held at the beginning of the monsoon, while a senior member of the Jharkhand Olympic Association pointed out the slow pace of work at the Games Village at Hotwar, about eight kms from here.
Hasmi disagreed about the pace of work that forced the IOA to defer the Games thrice in two years.
"Except the basketball stadium, all other stadia, including the main stadium, will be ready by February and the construction company will hand over the basketball stadium to us latest by May 15," Hashmi, who is also the General Secretary of the Jharkhand Olympic Association, claimed.

There would be separate stadia for almost all main events like track and field, basketball, cycling, lawn tennis, table tennis, field hockey and football approximately costing Rs 1000 crore.
Blaming political uncertainty in Jharkhand as the reason behind the deferments of the Games, Hasmi claimed that there were no more problems in construction.
"The construction work is going on at full swing. All building materials like PTF roof have arrived. I assure that not only can we meet the deadline, but will hold the Games successfully," he said.
Stating that about 12,000 participants, including players, technical officials and dignitaries, were expected, he said, "They will return home happy after getting a taste of our hospitality. Players also will not have any complaint.
"We have been facing criticism (for three deferments), but finally it is we who have to organise the event. We are confident that Jharkhand will emerge as the best host state in the Games history," he said.
Large screens will be set up for the benefit of spectators and the media centre will be equipped with modern gadgets and broadband, he said.
