KATHMANDU: India will provide financial aid to Nepal to construct a women's hostel to be built by a non-profit organisation promoting Gandhian values in the Himalayan nation. A MoU, for providing Rs 18.75 million as assistance, was signed between the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, District Development Committee, Kathmandu and Nepal Charkha Pracharak Gandhi-Tulsi Smarak Mahaguthi.
Nepal Charkha Pracharak Gandhi-Tulasi Smarak Mahaguthi, an non-profit organisation established in 1927 by Mahatma Gandhi's disciple Tulsi Meher, is known for promoting Gandhian ideals in Nepal through social services particularly in rural areas. The organisation is also actively involved in uplifting the socially and economically disadvantaged, especially women, through a variety of activities including vocational training.
The women's hostel building for vocational trainees at the Mahaguthi's Gothatar center is presently inadequate and in a dilapidated condition. The new hostel building being constructed with the assistance from the Indian government will be able to accommodate 100 women trainees. The main vocational training center was also constructed with India's assistance in 1968.
