IFC to advise Maharashtra on PPP infra projects

Maharashtra has roped in International Finance Corp, an arm of the World Bank, to advise it on developing infrastructure projects through public-private partnerships (PPP) route in the state.

NEW DELHI: Maharashtra has roped in International Finance Corp, an arm of the World Bank, to advise it on developing infrastructure projects through public-private partnerships (PPP) route in the state.

State-run Maharashtra Urban Infrastructure Development Co (MUIDC) has sought the help of IFC in its infrastructural PPP projects for boosting the economic growth in the state, IFC said in a release.

"IFC will assist MUIDC in preparation of its business plan and financial plan and identify capacity building requirements," IFC said.

Maharashtra, having a net commitment of USD 1 billion, has one of the largest World Bank programmes among states. All these projects aim at developing infrastructure in the state.

"Infrastructure is a priority in South Asia, where there is a shortage of bankable projects. Successful examples worldwide indicates that PPPs are useful in opening up markets ...We believe that IFC's infrastructure facility will achieve similar outcomes," World Bank group Executive Director Dhanendra Kumar said.

"Maharashtra Urban Infrastructure can play an important catalytic role in developing PPP projects in the state," IFC's infrastructure advisory Vipul Bhagat said.
