'If no agri-land is involved SEZ should'nt be opposed'

SEZ promoters feel there should not be any opposition if there is no issue of agricultural land and if the zones are promoted in a healthy way.

CANACONA (GOA): The Special Economic Zone (SEZ) promoters across the country feel that there should not be any opposition to the industrial enclaves if there is no issue of agricultural land and if the zones are promoted in the healthy way.

"There is no reason for any opposition for SEZs if promoters want to do it in a healthy way," Parsvnath SEZ Ltd, Director S N Sharma said.

Parsvnath is India's one of the leading SEZ promoters with 17 zones under their belt, of which four are notified in Nanded, Dehra Dun, Gurgaon and Indore.

He said the major issue is of land acquisition and promoters should discourage taking over the agricultural land.

"There is already legislation banning taking over of agricultural land for SEZs. That is being followed very strictly," Sharma said.

The SEZ promoters, IT companies and representatives of Kerala government today had brainstorming sessions on the IT SEZs here in South Goa.

About 127 companies participated in the conference, which was hosted by Medicorp Media Group Worldwide (MMG).

"We really need to sit and discuss on why there is opposition to SEZs. If ten hectare land can employ 15,000 locals, I fail to understand why this opposition," Marathon Group, Managing Director Mayur Shah said.

Marathon Group is promoting its SEZs surrounding Mumbai with one industrial enclave already commissioned in Navi Mumbai last week.

Shah said the land acquisition issues are 'overblown.' "Only 1.6 per cent of irrigable area is covered by the 400 SEZs," he stated.

Lodha Group, another India's leading SEZ promoters, feels that the SEZ issues are `teething problems'.

"Government is working a lot on these issues. There are always teething problems when something new happens," Senior Vice president (Commercial and Retail Transactions), Lodha Group, Bharat Dhuppar said.

He said things will improve in future as the economy is being opened further.

Lodha Group plans their SEZs in Dombivali, Thane and Pune in Maharashtra.

Dhuppar said the infrastructure development was happening all across the country but due to land prices, the promoters prefer second tier cities.

"There is more land available in the second tier cities. If I have huge chunk of land in metro, I would rather use it to create commercial space," Dhuppar, who's group has developed six million square metres of commercial spaces, said.
